My
Dad's Birthday: Dear old
dad....since he has retired, he has made
every effort to simplify his life. His
first gesture towards accepting his retirement
from the working world was to give me,
his son, his 500 or so ties. He had a
lot of them...and in just about every
color and pattern. Every time he visits
us, he brings a new box of things that
he doesn't need anymore, but that I probably
can. We appreciate his generosity, but
I am also aware that he doesn't need or
want a lot of material things any more.
Dad
is a guy who likes to spend time in the
garden. So one year, for his birthday,
I bought him knee pads as a gift. I thought
that would be a practical gift that he
could really use. But this year, I was
drawing a blank. His birthday was coming
up, and although he always tells me to
not "worry about him" for his
birthday, I know that if I didn't do anything,
I would feel pretty bad. But that was
the true dilemma - what to give someone
for their birthday when they really don't
need anything? I can't give him a tie
- he doesn't need them now. Flowers? That's
what I always give mom. Golf stuff? Well,
that wouldn't work since he has proclaimed
that he is giving it up - takes too much
time he says.
I
finally got the perfect idea for a gift
- something that I never would have thought
of had I not seen one on the kitchen table
at a friends house. A gift basket! Why

- he drinks about as much coffee as I

and a card telling him how much I love
him. What a perfect gift! And with no
time to spare. I needed the gift in a
few days. No problem! Appreciation
